why swap to an s14 subframe?

jesse if you have the body of an s13 hatch then i could use a piece for a patch panal. il post a pic later tonight so you can see what i need.

Yea, let me know I have a couple cars sitting around, hopefully one of them has the peice you need.

Due to where the lower control arm mounts, the s14/s15 have less anti squat for better grip. s13 are better suited for drift. I read up on it one night but my brain felt like it had gone through a mixer.

From what I got out of it... with having the front of the rlca mount much higher than the rear mount, it puts a binding force on the strut/spring/coilover assyembly. The front mount of the s14/s15 subframe is lower than the s13. But if you go to an s14 subframe I think you need to get offset subframe bushings as the mount points are a tiny bit different.

Some guy had them for cheap on ziliva, but he is being weird about selling them. So I may just go spl v2.

Yeah I researched it too a couple weeks ago. I had to go to sleep after reading it all. My brain was frieddddddd. :lol:

Maybe I'll let Jesse get the S14 subframe first, so he can do it, then help me do mine. :lol:

this is the worst of the surface rust on the underside. i am going to see if i can get a new exhaust hanger bracket ordered from work to replace this badly rusted one. i think the heat of the muffler made this place rust faster

the subframe was a bit of a pain in the ass to get out due to the front bushings being stuck on the studs. a bit of hammering, PB, and prying got it free after a while.

i think i am going to go with the energy suspension subframe bushings. they should be plenty solid, and should be a bit more street driving friendly. a few years ago i would have bought the solid aluminum, but anymore i can give up a bit of stiffness to have a little smother drive. also, it looks like with the energy suspension bushings there will be no need for collars. i also dont care for adjusting the bushings or swapping the subframes to improve handling 3%, when i never drive the car hard while turning.

anyone have any recomendations for what to do to treat the surface rust? i was thinking about using a rust disolving product then painting, then undercoating. idk?

Por15 for the end coating. Not sure what you should use to dissolve the rust. I know autoparts stores have a sort of rust converter/eliminator. Works pretty well. Converts the rust to a sandable black primer. Maybe Por15 has something like that.

And about the subframe bushings, did you look into the Nismo ones? They're more expensive than the ES bushings. They are a higher durometer than the stock bushings but not as stiff as the ES bushings. They also flex in ways that the polyurethane ones don't. I'm not sure if the subframe ones would be susceptible to those sorts of flexing though..

For surface rust, I'd sand/wirewheel what you can get too. Rust converter gel both the areas you can't get to and the ones you sanded/wheeled, then por15 it.

At least that's what aircooled vw guys do...and they are made from soup can metal. Should last a bit longer on a nissan =p.

I wouldn't go as far as stripping the undercoating. If it is flaking off anywhere or you see rust under it, you will need to strip it off until any area water can get trapped under it is gone. Basically if it's flaking or there's rust under it, strip that area off. I forget what brand it is, but you can find it on thesamba.com but there are several pretty good and cheap undercoating products around. Though for a 240, I'd just strip those areas and rubberized undercoat it (stuff in spray can) over top of some por15.

Yea, just knock off the loose dirt/paint, try to get everything cleaned off with a wire brush. POR-15 has a system you can use, with metal ready and a few other steps, check into that. With how little weather your car sees, knocking the loose stuff off, a coupe coats of POR-15 to make sure you have full coverage, then some rubberized undercoating if you want will make it last a loooong time.

Also I was going to get these, but the guy doesn't seem very motivated to sell them. Send him a pm tell him I said you could have them. I think these things retail for like $250 or something crazy. He has them for $50.
